Evolution of Research into Interpreting in the Western European Scientific Tradition

Evolution of Research into Interpreting in the Western European Scientific Tradition

Abstract

In the twentieth century and due to the two World Wars, interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous alike) was recognized as an official profession. Its representatives play an important role in establishing contacts between people speaking different languages in various areas. These events led to the necessity of a more detailed study of the mechanisms of interpreting in order to optimize and improve the didactics of interpreting. This article describes the history of studying interpreting in the Western Europe from the middle of the 20th century with a description of principal researchers and their ideas, which is of the utmost interest and of great value for the Russian school of interpreting.
